A storefront that treats every customer differently

The platform decision behind the membership, the checkout and the international stores.

Context

The storefront had outgrown its basic plan just as the business needed personalised offers, a smarter checkout, international stores and a corporate-gifting business.

The problem

None of that could run on rules the basic setup could not execute in real time.

The bet

  • Make the case for Shopify Plus on one argument: to treat every customer differently, the storefront has to run real-time rules.
  • Rebuild checkout around the customer: the right add-on at the right moment, payment options that adapt to the order, protection against fraud and bots.
  • Launch a dedicated store for the UAE and a private portal for corporate buyers with their own pricing and customisation, sharing one back end.
  • Automate the boring parts, from low-stock alerts to recognising loyal customers, so the team could spend its time on customers.

My role

Owned the platform decision and the storefront experience.

What shipped

A storefront that personalises offers, checkout and benefits per customer, with regional stores and a corporate portal on one foundation.

What happened

Per Shopify's case study: revenue doubled year on year and conversion rose 30%. I later spoke about the journey at a Shopify event in Bengaluru.

What it taught me

Every time the site is tuned to how customers actually behave, conversion goes up. The platform only matters because it lets you do that quickly, in-house.

A good opener

Hi Nikhil — I run [brand], roughly [₹ revenue], selling [online / online and in stores]. The problem I'm trying to solve is [repeat rate / stores and web / personalisation / hiring a growth lead]. Would you be open to a 20-minute call?

Fill in the brackets and send it as it is. That is enough for me to say yes or no honestly.
